Text on poster: "The Declaration of Indepence was originally composed by Thomas Jefferson with a drafting committee including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman,
and Robert Livingston. Final edits and approval were made by the Continental Congress. The Declaration served as a formal explanation of why the 13 American colonies had
declared independence from Great Britain. It was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, over a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The
original parchment document, written and signed in 1776, is exhibited at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The Declaration of Independence is considered America's
"Birth Certificate." It is the first attempt in history for a group of common, ordinary people to design and implement a new nation based on the unalienable, God-given, natural rights of
freedom and equality for all its participants." Copyright © The American Heritage Education Foundation, Inc.
